In March 2006 I took a mini-vacation to the Batik region of Sumatra.

Enjoy a detour and enjoy some pictures in an area of Indonesia that is quite cool, temperature wise. About a mile from this location, the next morning we went to a bathing area that had water coming from hot springs. They had a no-ceiling concrete walled building. The water pipe was about 10 feet off the ground coming off the hill behind it. The rooms had no doors and and had two 1 1/2 inch pipes coming out of the center wall which came out from the water pressure coming off the hill. Enjoy the descriptions for each of the pictures.

Next to the base is a Christian cemetery. It is behind Angela's cousin's house and to the left of the Army base.

In 2006 I took a trip to the Batik area East of Medan by 6 hours by car. Behind Angela's cousin's house, across the river, there was a Christian cemetery. It is about 8 AM and after this picture we slowly made our way along the road and there was an army base on the other side of the river. After I took the next picture, some of the enlisted men began to ask us to come on base, so we continued down the road and entered at the gate.

The enlisted men were sweeping their walk areas and getting weeds out of the flowers to keep busy.

Upon getting permission to enter at the gate was this sign with the name of their base. In the background is the chow hall and the offices.

All of the guys that were calling for us plus some others that joined in came to the edge of the bridge and waited for Angela and Joe to get to them.

It wasn't long until they wanted to have their picture taken with Joe. Joe has seen in almost any country that no matter if it man or woman, they want to have a picture taken with an American. We all had a great question and answer period with all of asking questions and Angela interpreting back and forth. We found out that they have to pay a sum of money to get into the army. Their pay as a corporal is about 600,000 rupiah per month (approximately $62 per month.) This compares to an American getting more than $1,000 per month. They spend 4 months a year living off the land in the jungles of Indonesia. No chow hall following them.

After about a 1/2 hour, they invited us to come an play some dominoes with them. They do not count the dots on the dominoes, they just play to see who goes out first so the games went pretty fast. They were quite hospitable and brought out some ice tea. That is different as most of the people do not have a refrigerator to keep anything cold.

The games continued on and one and I finally won one gave from about 30 games. They had quite a laugh when I won and they all shook my hand.

This guy was making sure that his sergeant did not stack the shuffle. A bad shuffle may cause undue stress and call for a new game.

I hope you enjoyed these pictures. I have found that generally, people are friendly to each other no matter where in the world you go. It is only a very few that cannot get along with foreigners and they also do not fit in their societies either.
