Stabat, Sumatera, Indonesia is located about 1 hour from Medan. Note the arrows pointing towards the two cities. Stabat has a population of 10,000 plus and Medan has a population of 4,000,000 plus. <---------- Stabat <------ Medan <---- Nias Island
If you follow down the middle of the map, you will find an arrow pointing at Nias Island. Joe and Angela were on the island of Nias doing medical clinics during late March 2004. Joe had left, gone to Medan and stayed a couple of days after he dropped off two patients they could not treat on Nias. That is where Joe was introduced to a street child when she came up to beg for money on a Sunday evening. On Monday he continued to Padang Sumatra and at 11:58 PM, the 9.1 earthquake shook his bed for 3 minutes. During the next morning Joe went to the internet cafe to find the telephone numbers for Helimissions. He had met the two men that started that organization a couple years earlier in Padang. He found their website, found a response for in German, as they are in Switzerland. He arranged with them to have their helicopter pilot meet up with John Colvin in Nias, so they could go back in and extract Angela Tobing, Candy Iha (a nurse from Hawaii) and her daughter, and Paul Petty from Evergreen, Colorado who were spending another week on Nias conducting medical clinics. You can also spend a Short Term Missions vacation with us. Check out the page for volunteering. Write us at: volunteer@compassion-4-kids-int.org. Or get involved, even from home by writing: |
